BP Dismisses Chairman Albert Manifold Amid Governance Issues

On Tuesday, May 26, 2026, British energy titan BP declared the immediate dismissal of Chairman Albert Manifold. The unanimous decision by the board was driven by “serious concerns” over governance standards, oversight, and conduct.

Manifold, previously the CEO of Irish building materials firm CRH, assumed the role of BP’s chairman in October 2025. His tenure lasted less than a year. While the company refrained from disclosing specific details about the alleged shortcomings, it is speculated that his hands-on management style was deemed overly intrusive by his peers.

Amanda Blanc, BP’s senior independent director, expressed: “Albert has helped bring a welcome focus and pace to BP’s transformation. However, the board has been surprised and disappointed to learn of governance oversight and conduct issues it deems unacceptable and has taken decisive action.”

In the interim, Ian Tyler has been appointed as chairman while the search for a permanent successor is underway. This abrupt change further contributes to BP’s recent leadership instability, with the company having seen three CEOs in as many years. BP shares dipped by as much as 9% following the news. However, under new CEO Meg O’Neill, who assumed the role in April 2026, the company’s strategic focus on oil and gas operations remains steadfast.
