Memorial Day 2026 Sees Highest Gas Prices in Four Years at $4.51 Per Gallon

American travelers are facing the highest Memorial Day weekend gas prices in four years, with the national average reaching $4.507 per gallon on May 25, 2026, according to AAA data. This marks an increase of roughly $1.50 per gallon since late February, before the U.S.-Iran conflict began impacting global fuel markets.

California drivers are experiencing the steepest prices, with regular gasoline averaging $6.12 per gallon statewide—the only state to surpass the $6 mark. Hawaii and Washington follow closely at $5.64 and $5.77 per gallon respectively. Despite the elevated costs, AAA estimates a record 45 million Americans will travel this Memorial Day weekend, with 39.1 million traveling by car.

“Americans will be spending $2 billion more on gasoline over the four day Memorial Day weekend compared to a year ago,” according to GasBuddy estimates.

Experts recommend fuel-efficient driving techniques to maximize mileage. Here are a few tips:

  • Smooth acceleration
  • Proper tire inflation
  • Removing unnecessary cargo

The surge in fuel prices comes as tensions in the Middle East continue to affect global oil markets, though recent diplomatic developments suggest potential stabilization ahead.
