OpenAI and Nvidia Adopt Google’s SynthID AI Watermarking for Enhanced Content Transparency

In a significant stride towards AI content transparency, Google announced on May 22, 2026, that its SynthID watermarking technology is now being embraced by leading AI companies. These include OpenAI, Nvidia, ElevenLabs, and Kakao. This development marks a considerable momentum towards establishing industry-wide standards for identifying AI-generated media.

SynthID technology embeds nearly invisible digital signals into AI-generated images, videos, and audio. These signals can withstand compression, cropping, and format changes. Google disclosed that this technology has already watermarked over 100 billion images and videos and 60,000 years of audio since its inception three years ago. The company is now extending SynthID verification tools to Google Search and Chrome, thereby simplifying the process for users to identify AI-generated content across the web.

OpenAI has confirmed that all images generated through ChatGPT will now carry SynthID watermarks. These will be in addition to C2PA Content Credentials, the industry standard for content provenance. Nvidia is integrating SynthID into its Cosmos world foundation models. Furthermore, Google has launched an AI Content Detection API on Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform. This move enables businesses to identify AI-generated media for various purposes such as fraud prevention, content moderation, and fact-checking.
