Meta Announces Major AI Restructuring: 8,000 Jobs Cut
Meta Platforms commenced a significant restructuring process on May 20, 2026, notifying approximately 8,000 employees about their impending layoffs. This move is part of a broader strategy to fund the company’s ambitious artificial intelligence (AI) projects. The layoffs, which represent about 10% of Meta’s workforce, signify the largest company-wide reduction since CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s 2022-2023 “Year of Efficiency” campaign.
In a memo circulated among the employees, Zuckerberg emphasized that “success isn’t a given” in the fiercely competitive AI sector, describing AI as “the most consequential technology of our lifetimes.” The layoff process kicked off at 4 a.m. local time in Singapore, with employees in the UK and US receiving notifications as their mornings began. The affected departments include integrity, cybersecurity, and content design divisions.
Concurrently with the job cuts, Meta announced the redirection of 7,000 employees into newly formed AI-focused teams, such as Applied AI Engineering and Agent Transformation Accelerator. The company also scrapped plans to fill 6,000 open positions. US employees affected by the layoffs will receive 16 weeks of severance pay, with an additional two weeks for every year of employment. Meta’s capital expenditures for AI infrastructure are estimated to hit between $125 billion and $145 billion in 2026, more than double the spending in 2025. Zuckerberg assured the employees that no other company-wide layoffs are anticipated this year.
