Vivid Sydney Festival: A 24-Hour Creative Destination
Vivid Sydney, the world’s largest festival of light, music, and ideas, commenced on May 22, 2026. This year marks a historic first for the 16-year-old festival with a groundbreaking expansion. For the first time in its history, Vivid Sydney is offering daytime programming alongside its traditional after-dark spectacular. This transformation turns Australia’s Harbour City into a 24-hour creative destination, running until June 13.
The festival boasts a record-breaking 22 drone shows titled “Star-Bound” across 11 nights at Cockle Bay. This is the highest number in festival history, following their cancellation in 2025 due to safety concerns. The free 6.5-kilometer Vivid Light Walk showcases 43 installations along an unbroken route from Circular Quay through Barangaroo to Darling Harbour. Over 80% of the festival program is available for free to the public.
“Vivid Sydney 2026 will be bigger and bolder than ever, transforming the city day and night with an incredible program of light, music, ideas and food,” said Festival Director Brett Sheehy AO. New daytime experiences include aerial performances, public art installations, theatre, and family-friendly activities. One such activity is Wonderverse, an immersive 40-minute experience designed for children ages 4-10 at the Maritime Museum.
The expanded Vivid Music program features performances across 23 nights at the Sydney Opera House and other venues. Sold-out shows from artists including Mitski, Mogwai, and Flying Lotus are part of the lineup. The Vivid Food program highlights include the Regional Dinner Series and special appearances by renowned chef Yotam Ottolenghi. The festival is expected to significantly boost Sydney’s tourism economy, with hotel occupancy already reaching 89.1% in May—the highest since 2019.
