Remembering Hal Shevers: The Visionary Behind Sporty’s Pilot Shop
Hal Shevers, the visionary founder of Sporty’s Pilot Shop, passed away on May 12, 2026, at the age of 90 at his Florida home. From humble beginnings in 1961, Shevers built one of general aviation’s most recognizable brands, starting with selling portable aviation radios from the trunk of his car.
Over a span of six decades, Shevers transformed Sporty’s into a leading provider of aviation supplies, training materials, and online education. A certified flight instructor, he pioneered the three-day ground school format in the 1960s, traveling the country to educate pilots nationwide. His unwavering dedication to pilot education became the cornerstone of Sporty’s mission, leading to the establishment of Sporty’s Academy, an FAA-approved Part 141 flight school.
In recognition of his significant contributions to aviation education, Shevers was inducted into the Experimental Aircraft Association Flight Instructor Hall of Fame in 2007. He remained a staunch advocate for general aviation throughout his career, supporting programs such as the EAA Young Eagles and AOPA youth outreach efforts.
After more than 60 years of leadership, Shevers and his wife Sandy retired from the company in 2024. As an employee-owned company, Sporty’s continues to uphold his original vision of creating high-quality products backed by friendly, helpful service.
