Lufthansa Group’s Historic $7.7B Fleet Expansion with Airbus & Boeing
On May 11, 2026, the Lufthansa Group made a significant announcement regarding a major fleet expansion. The group has approved an order for 20 new long-haul aircraft, valued at a staggering $7.7 billion at list prices. This order is split evenly between two renowned manufacturers, with 10 Airbus A350-900s and 10 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners set to join the fleet.
The new aircraft are scheduled for delivery between 2032 and 2034, replacing older, less efficient models in the group’s fleet. Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, emphasized the importance of this order. He stated it represents “a sustainable investment in the future of the Lufthansa Group” and “a clear commitment to a modern fleet, premium quality, and further reducing CO2 emissions.”
Both the Airbus A350-900 and Boeing 787-9 are renowned for their exceptional fuel efficiency, reduced carbon emissions, and quieter operations compared to their predecessors. The gradual standardization of these models is expected to:
- Reduce complexity
- Increase operational efficiency
- Lower maintenance costs across the airline group’s network
With this order, the Lufthansa Group’s total aircraft order book now stands at 232 planes. This includes 107 next-generation long-haul jets, representing the largest fleet modernization in the company’s history.
