Thailand’s Tourism Industry Soars with Over 11 Million Visitors in Early 2026

Thailand’s tourism sector has shown remarkable resilience, welcoming over 11.97 million international visitors in the first five months of 2026. This signals a robust recovery for one of Asia’s most popular travel destinations.

Recent tourism data up to May 3, 2026, reveals that China has emerged as the top source market, accounting for 22% of all arrivals in early May with a 31% weekly increase. Chinese visitors now average 19,300 arrivals daily, reestablishing the country’s position as Thailand’s largest tourism market. The surge is further boosted by impressive growth from regional markets:

  • Japan: Recorded a 105% week-on-week surge
  • Malaysia: Saw a 26% rise

This influx has spurred substantial economic activity for Thailand’s hospitality and retail sectors. Hotels and resorts, particularly in beach destinations like Krabi and Pattaya, are reporting robust occupancy rates. The strong performance is a reflection of government-backed tourism campaigns, improved connectivity with increased international flights, and simplified entry processes that are encouraging travelers to return.

Despite facing challenges such as geopolitical headwinds that led to a 57% year-on-year drop in Middle Eastern arrivals, the Thai government remains optimistic. It maintains its 2026 forecast of 35 million foreign arrivals, based on the strong performance of core Asian markets. Tourism officials are emphasizing sustainable tourism practices and encouraging visitors to explore lesser-known destinations beyond traditional hotspots to manage the increased demand.
