Explosion at Safran Aerospace Plant Near Toulouse Critically Injures Two Workers
On the morning of May 5, 2026, an explosion at Safran Ventilation Systems’ aerospace manufacturing plant critically injured two employees. The plant is located in Blagnac, near Toulouse, France.
The blast took place at approximately 10:30 AM local time within a test bay at the facility on Place Marcel-Dassault. This location is merely hundreds of meters away from Toulouse-Blagnac Airport. The plant is known for manufacturing fans, valves, and electric compressors for the aerospace and defense sectors. Initial reports suggest that the explosion involved equipment using compressed air during testing procedures.
Emergency services were quick to respond, and the entire facility was promptly evacuated. The explosion resulted in two workers suffering severe injuries and being rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Additionally, two other workers who were further from the blast point sustained minor injuries. Several employees were also treated for shock after rushing to assist the victims immediately after the explosion.
Toulouse public prosecutor, David Charmatz, announced the opening of an investigation on charges of involuntary injuries. The aim is to determine the sequence of events and any potential liability. The inquiry will closely examine the condition of the equipment, compliance with safety protocols, and any prior alerts concerning the installation. In response to the incident, Safran has established a psychological support team for affected employees. It’s worth noting that test benches for aerospace equipment typically operate at significant pressures and are subject to strict safety and maintenance protocols.
