Global Aviation Pilots Protest Over Starlink’s Exorbitant Aviation Pricing
General aviation pilots across the globe are voicing their indignation after SpaceX’s Starlink imposed a 100 mph speed cap on standard internet plans in March 2026. This move has effectively forced aircraft operators to switch to costly aviation-specific tiers that are up to 20 times more expensive.
The newly introduced Aviation 300MPH plan is priced at $250 per month, offering only 20GB of data. On the other hand, the Aviation 450MPH tier costs a whopping $1,000 monthly. These new plans are a stark contrast to the previous $50-165 monthly plans that were compatible with aviation speeds. The 100 mph (87 knots) cap has rendered standard plans virtually useless for all fixed-wing aircraft in normal cruise flight.
“A large number of general aviation operators worldwide have utilized Starlink as a safety-enhancing tool. It’s unfortunate that the company has now priced out the majority of general aviation pilots,” stated Jim Coon, AOPA Senior Vice President. On March 9, 2026, AOPA and the International Council of Aircraft Owner and Pilot Associations sent a formal letter to Elon Musk, representing 400,000 pilots across 80 countries.
A Change.org petition has already gathered over 4,000 signatures from pilots who invested in Starlink Mini hardware based on its affordable pricing, only to be subjected to what many are calling a “bait and switch.” Many pilots are now reverting to legacy services like SiriusXM for in-flight weather and connectivity.
