Spirit Airlines Braces for Potential Shutdown Amid Stalled Bailout Talks
Spirit Airlines is on the brink of potentially halting operations as soon as Saturday, following the failure to agree on a $500 million federal bailout proposal, according to multiple sources on Friday.
President Donald Trump revealed that his administration had presented Spirit Airlines with a “final proposal” for a rescue package. However, he underscored that he would only move forward “if it’s a good deal” for the government. The budget airline, currently operating under bankruptcy protection for the second time in less than two years, has been severely impacted by the escalating jet fuel costs due to the Iran conflict.
In just the first two months of 2026, the airline suffered a loss of $60 million. This was even before the jet fuel prices doubled in the wake of escalating Middle East tensions. Spirit had been on a path to emerge from bankruptcy earlier this summer, but the war in Iran caused fuel prices to surge, completely derailing its financial restructuring plan.
The proposed bailout plan would provide Spirit with the $500 million loan it requires, in return for the government potentially owning 90% of the airline. However, this plan has met with opposition from within Trump’s own administration. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy described it as “good money after bad,” and there has been bipartisan resistance from Congress.
If Spirit does shut down, it would mark the first closure of a significant U.S. airline since Midway Airlines ceased operations following the September 11 attacks. The airline has approximately 9,000 flights scheduled through the end of May, which could potentially impact 60,000 passengers daily. Major carriers including American Airlines, United Airlines, and JetBlue have announced their readiness to assist Spirit customers with fare caps and alternative travel options.
