New and Improved Aviation Weather Handbook Released by FAA
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has released an updated Aviation Weather Handbook (FAA-H-8083-28B) as of April 13, 2026. This updated version provides pilots with enhanced weather information resources and modern forecasting tools.
The updated handbook includes new content on icing, radar interpretation (including chaff), and space weather phenomena. Notably, outdated tools have been replaced with modern resources, such as the Graphical Forecast for Aviation (GFA). This gives pilots access to the most relevant, real-world weather information available today.
This comprehensive reference consolidates U.S. aviation weather services, meteorological theory, and hazards. These include thunderstorms, turbulence, icing, and mountain waves. It covers practical tools like METARs, TAFs, AIRMETs, and SIGMETs, along with atmospheric science, observations, forecasts, and decision-making resources.
The information in the handbook is applicable to student pilots, experienced pilots, and flight instructors alike. It offers a key reference for meteorology and weather services applicable to FAA Knowledge Tests and airman certification. This comprehensive weather resource addresses flight safety in both visual meteorological conditions (VMC) and instrument meteorological conditions (IMC).
The update is vital for flight training and equips pilots with the knowledge required for safe preflight planning and real-time weather avoidance. These are key factors in preventing weather-related accidents, which remain one of the leading causes of general aviation incidents.
