USask Hosts Canada’s First University-Owned Quantum Computer
The University of Saskatchewan (USask) is now the proud owner of Canada’s first university-owned, vendor-supported, full-stack quantum computer. This milestone was achieved with the installation of a 9-qubit Novera QPU from Rigetti Computing. The announcement, made on April 2, 2026, positions this Prairie institution as a unique hub for quantum innovation and research across multiple disciplines.
Shipped in March 2026, the quantum system will be managed by USask’s Centre for Quantum Topology and its Applications (quanTA). This represents a significant investment of $2.33 million CAD, a combination of federal and provincial funding. The deployment is supported by Prairies Economic Development Canada with $1.93 million and Innovation Saskatchewan with $400,000 through its Innovation & Science Fund.
The open-architecture system integrates Rigetti’s superconducting processor with a Zero Point Cryogenics dilution refrigerator, Qblox control systems, and QuantrolOx software for automated calibration. This modular design allows for future scalability, with upgrade options ranging from 36 to 108 qubits.
- Research applications include:
- Vaccine discovery in partnership with the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO)
- Quantum-secure data encryption for defense applications
- Optimization processes for agriculture and energy industries
The system strengthens the emerging “Quantum Corridor”, linking quantum research centers in Saskatchewan and Alberta. This establishes Western Canada as a competitive force in quantum technology development.
