Aviation Community Protests Starlink’s Speed Cap and Pricey Plan Changes

General aviation pilots are voicing strong frustration after SpaceX’s Starlink imposed a 100 mph speed cap on standard Roam and Priority internet plans. This change effectively forces most aircraft operators into significantly more expensive aviation-specific tiers. The change, implemented in early March 2026, has sparked widespread outcry in the GA community and prompted thousands to sign online petitions.

Previously, pilots could use standard Roam or Priority plans with portable Starlink Mini hardware for approximately $50-$165 per month. These plans offered reasonable data allowances at speeds up to 450 mph. Under the new structure, pilots needing connectivity above 100 mph (87 knots) must now subscribe to Aviation 300MPH at $250 per month with only 20GB of data, or Aviation 450MPH at $1,000 per month. Both new tiers charge substantial overage fees—$10 per GB and $50 per GB respectively.

The 100 mph ground-speed cap is problematic as most piston and turboprop aircraft exceed this threshold in cruise flight. This renders the affordable plans useless for in-flight connectivity. One pilot stated in the petition:

“For those of us in general aviation, Starlink has been nothing short of a revolution… It has dramatically enhanced my flying experience, improving not only my situational awareness but also my ability to access up-to-date weather and airport safety information while airborne.”

A Change.org petition has gathered over 4,000 signatures as of early March, with pilots calling the move a “bait and switch.”
