FAA Announces Urgent Safety Directive for Specific Bell 505 Helicopters
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has urgently enforced an airworthiness directive (AD 2026-05-51) for certain Bell 505 helicopters. This critical action addresses a severe safety flaw that could lead to a total loss of control if not rectified. The directive, which came into effect on April 16, 2026, applies to Bell Textron Canada Limited Model 505 helicopters. Specifically, those with serial numbers 65011 and subsequent, equipped with certain ballast box assemblies.
This emergency order was triggered by the detection of a failure in the hinge assembly on the aft movable ballast box assembly. This malfunction could potentially allow ballast weights to escape the ballast box, posing a risk of striking the tail rotor assembly during flight. This situation was initially identified by Transport Canada’s Emergency AD CF-2026-12, issued on March 3, 2026. The issue involved possible plastic deformation and improper pin engagement in the knuckles of the door hinge.
The directive mandates operators to update the Limitations section of the existing rotorcraft flight manual. The update is to prohibit the use of ballast weights within the aft movable ballast box assembly. To ensure immediate compliance with this vital safety measure, the FAA dispatched the emergency AD directly to all known U.S. owners and operators of the affected helicopters.
