Capella Kyoto: Japan’s Latest Addition to Luxury Destinations
Capella Hotels and Resorts has proudly unveiled its first venture in Japan, signifying a noteworthy advancement for luxury hospitality in Kyoto. The 89-room Capella Kyoto welcomed its first guests on March 22, 2026, impeccably timed to align with the city’s iconic cherry blossom season.
Strategically located in the historic Miyagawa-cho geisha district, the property is just a stone’s throw away from the Kenninji Temple—Kyoto’s oldest Zen temple—and the esteemed Miyagawa-cho Kaburenjo Theatre. The hotel, a masterpiece designed by the acclaimed architect Kengo Kuma & Associates in partnership with Singapore-based Brewin Design Office, offers a modern luxury interpretation of Kyoto’s traditional machiya townhouses, complete with narrow alleys, secluded gardens, and multi-layered interior spaces.
The hotel’s gastronomic highlight is SoNoMa by SingleThread, a unique collaboration with the three-Michelin-starred California restaurant. Other dining options include the Japanese restaurant Yoi and French brasserie Lanterne. The property also boasts the Auriga Spa, featuring three private onsen rooms and six Onsen Suites with exclusive hot spring baths.
Through its innovative “Capella Curates” program, guests are offered exclusive access to seldom available cultural experiences. These include:
- Private ochaya encounters with maiko
- Front-row seats at the restored Kaburenjo Theatre
- Workshops with traditional craftspeople
