Reddit’s New Initiative: Combating Bot Activity with Human Verification
Reddit is stepping up its game against automated bot accounts. The social platform is set to implement a comprehensive new system that will require suspected bots to prove their humanity. In addition, legitimate automated accounts will now be visibly labeled. These changes, as announced by CEO Steve Huffman, will take effect from March 31, 2026.
The platform will start labeling approved automated accounts with an “[App]” tag. This will make it clear for users when they are interacting with authorized bots. On the other hand, accounts that exhibit suspicious behavior—such as unusually rapid posting or bot-like patterns—will be asked to complete human verification. This verification will be done using third-party tools like passkeys from Apple, Google, and YubiKey, or biometric services like Face ID.
Reddit has been quick to clarify that this is not a sitewide verification. It will only be triggered when activity appears to be “fishy”. Accounts that fail to pass the verification may face restrictions. To give an idea of the scale of the problem, the company currently removes approximately 100,000 bot accounts daily.
“Our aim is to confirm there is a person behind the account, not who that person is,” Huffman stated. “The goal is to increase transparency of what is what on Reddit while preserving the anonymity that makes Reddit unique.”
This move comes in the wake of growing concerns about the “dead internet theory”. It also follows the recent shutdown of competitor Digg, which was overrun by AI agents. For brands and marketers, this crackdown signifies that authentic human engagement will become increasingly valuable. This is because automated activity will now become more visible and restricted.
