Real-Time Language Translation on iPhone Headphones Now Possible with Google Translate
Google has officially expanded its Live Translate feature to iOS devices. This allows iPhone users to access real-time language translation through any pair of headphones. The feature now supports more than 70 languages and is available in multiple countries including the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.
The technology, powered by Google’s Gemini AI, goes beyond literal word-for-word translation. It preserves the speaker’s tone, cadence, and emphasis to make conversations feel more natural. Unlike previous versions that required specific hardware like Pixel Buds, the new implementation works with any standard wired or wireless headphones.
Setup is minimal: users simply open the Google Translate app, connect their headphones, tap “Live Translate,” and select their language pair. The feature was first launched on Android in late 2025 and has now expanded to Apple’s ecosystem. This makes it accessible to millions more users worldwide.
While Apple offers its own Live Translation feature through Apple Intelligence, it currently requires AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2/3, or AirPods Max, and supports fewer languages. Google’s broader compatibility and extensive language support give it a significant advantage for travelers and international communicators.
