ICAO Implements Stricter Environmental Standards for New Aircraft

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council has adopted new, more demanding environmental standards for aircraft worldwide, including next-generation supersonic jets. This marks a significant shift in global aviation policy.

On March 27, 2026, the ICAO Council announced that the CO2 emissions standard has been made 10% more stringent and will be applicable to new aircraft type designs as of 2031. Additionally, a more complex stringent CO2 emissions standard will apply to new deliveries of in-production aircraft types from 2035.

The organization is also implementing harsher noise requirements by 2029, raising the bar by 6 decibels for larger aircraft and 2 decibels for smaller ones. Future supersonic aircraft will need to comply with current noise limits for subsonic aircraft as of 2029.

With formal adoption complete, ICAO has established August 3, 2026, as the effective date, with global implementation set for January 1, 2027. The standards were developed through a multi-year process involving the Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection, extensive consultation with member states, and review of the latest aircraft and engine technologies.
