easyJet to Equip New Fleet with Ultra-Lightweight Seats for Emission Reduction

easyJet, on March 23, 2026, announced an innovative step towards reducing emissions and enhancing passenger comfort. The airline will equip more than 237 new Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft with ultra-lightweight Kestrel seats from British manufacturer Mirus Aircraft Seating, starting in 2028.

The revolutionary Kestrel seats are over 20% lighter than current seats. They are constructed with a carbon fiber frame weighing just 6.9 kg when fully dressed. This significant reduction in weight will save up to 500 kg per aircraft on larger models. This translates to an annual fuel saving of more than 12,936 tonnes and a reduction of over 40,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

What’s more, these lighter seats will also provide passengers with up to two inches of additional legroom without changing seat pitch. This is made possible by their thinner frame and pre-reclined ergonomic design.

David Morgan, easyJet’s Chief Operating Officer, stated: “This investment supports our continued focus on making our operations as efficient as possible, capitalising on small incremental gains that result in meaningful reductions in fuel burn and CO2 emissions.”

The seats are also approximately 98% recyclable at end of life, supporting circularity and reducing waste. easyJet will be the first airline to receive these seats on new aircraft deliveries.
