Anthropic’s Claude AI: A New Era of Remote Computer Control
Anthropic made a groundbreaking announcement on Monday. Its Claude AI assistant can now autonomously control users’ computers to complete tasks. This significant advancement propels us further in the race towards agent-based artificial intelligence.
The new capability of Claude allows it to open applications, navigate web browsers, fill spreadsheets, and execute complex workflows without any manual input. This is a major leap in the field of AI technology.
When assigned a task, Claude first checks for direct integrations with apps like Google Calendar or Slack. If these connections aren’t available, Claude resorts to controlling the computer in a human-like manner, using the screen to point, click, and navigate. Users can assign tasks remotely from their iPhone using Dispatch, a feature released last week, and return to finished work on their desktop.
In a demonstration video, Anthropic showcased a user running late for a meeting asking Claude to export a pitch deck as a PDF and attach it to a meeting invite. The AI completed these tasks entirely on its own. This feature is currently available as a research preview for Claude Pro and Claude Max subscribers on macOS, with Windows support planned for future updates.
However, Anthropic cautions that the technology is still in its early stages and Claude can make mistakes. The company has implemented safeguards including a permission-first approach where Claude requests access before interacting with new applications. Users can stop the AI at any time. This move positions Anthropic as a direct competitor to viral open-source frameworks like OpenClaw in the emerging agentic AI space.
