FAA Launches Extensive eVTOL Pilot Program in 26 U.S. States
The U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration have recently unveiled eight pilot projects across 26 states. These projects are designed to test electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and advanced air mobility operations, with flights anticipated to commence by summer 2026.
Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced the Advanced Air Mobility and eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP) on March 9, stating it will “dramatically improve how people and products move.” The program received an impressive number of proposals, with over 30 submissions from eVTOL manufacturers, state agencies, and local governments.
The selected projects will be conducted in various locations including New York, Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Utah, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, and New Mexico. The aircraft will be provided by renowned manufacturers such as Archer, Joby, Beta Technologies, Wisk, Electra, and Elroy Air. The program will cover a wide range of services:
- Urban air taxi service
- Regional passenger transportation
- Cargo operations
- Emergency medical response
- Autonomous flight technologies
This initiative marks a significant shift in aviation regulation. It allows pre-certified aircraft to conduct revenue-generating operations in commercial airspace before receiving full FAA type certification. The data gathered from these pilot projects will assist the FAA in developing new regulations for safely integrating advanced air mobility aircraft into the national airspace system.
