Technical Hiccups for AmaWaterways’ New Ship AmaSofia on Its Debut
AmaWaterways‘ latest addition to their fleet, the AmaSofia, faced unexpected technical issues during its inaugural journey on the Rhine River. This occurred merely days after a grand christening ceremony, graced by over 1,200 travel advisors. The 154-passenger ship suffered a propulsion failure, impacting two of its three engines during the maiden voyage.
The AmaSofia was officially christened on March 14, 2026, amidst a special ceremony on the Rhine. The event was attended by members of the travel advisor community who were present for the ASTA River Cruise Expo in Amsterdam. The celebration culminated with a breathtaking 300-drone light show over the Rhine. However, during her maiden voyage, the ship faced a propulsion issue, necessitating operational modifications.
The AmaSofia is the 24th European vessel of the cruise line, boasting the company’s signature twin-balcony stateroom design. The ship commenced the 2026 season early on the Rhine and is slated to sail popular itineraries such as Rhine Castles & Swiss Alps through April and May. Come June, the vessel will relocate to the Danube, operating between Budapest and Vilshofen on itineraries like Romantic Danube, Melodies of the Danube, and Christmas Markets on the Danube.
Despite the technical hiccup, AmaWaterways continues to welcome travel advisor partners to experience the ship throughout the year for familiarization sailings. This allows more advisors to witness the vessel’s upgrades and refreshed branding firsthand. Over 100 travel advisors sailed onboard AmaSofia during the post-expo FAM cruise following the conference.
