FAA Enforces Emergency Directive for Certain Bell 505 Helicopters Due to Safety Concerns

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued an emergency airworthiness directive, AD 2026-05-51, for certain Bell 505 helicopters. This directive addresses a critical fault that, if left unchecked, could result in a total loss of control.

This emergency order was issued in March 2026, mere days after Transport Canada issued its own emergency directive. The latter highlighted issues with a hinge assembly discovered during a post-flight inspection. The directive specifically applies to Model 505 helicopters with serial numbers 65011 and greater. These helicopters are equipped with aft movable ballast box assemblies.

The Bell 505 has gained popularity among police departments and military training programs worldwide due to its modern avionics and dual-channel full authority digital engine control. Despite the emergency order, the aircraft continues to see strong adoption. Recent deliveries include two helicopters to the Pasadena Police Department at VAI Verticon 2026.

Helicopter operators are strongly advised to comply immediately with the emergency AD requirements to ensure safe operations. The FAA’s swift action underlines the agency’s unwavering commitment to aviation safety when potential control issues are identified.
