General Aviation Community Expresses Concern Over Starlink’s Price Hike

SpaceX’s Starlink has dramatically restructured its pricing for general aviation pilots, imposing a 100 mph speed cap on standard plans and forcing aircraft operators into significantly more expensive aviation-specific tiers. This has sparked widespread protest across the GA community.

The new Aviation 300MPH plan costs $250 per month with only 20 GB of data, while the Aviation 450MPH plan jumps to $1,000 monthly—a massive increase from the previous $50-$65 Roam and Priority plans that many pilots were using.

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) and the International Council of Aircraft Owner and Pilot Associations sent a letter to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on March 9 expressing concern about pricing that has “priced out the lion’s share of general aviation pilots.”

A Change.org petition has gathered over 4,000 signatures from frustrated pilots who invested in Starlink hardware expecting economically viable service. Many had integrated the satellite internet into their operations for real-time weather information, flight planning resources, and emergency communications—particularly valuable in regions where traditional connectivity is limited.

AOPA’s Jim Coon noted that pilots purchased equipment “in good faith” and requested SpaceX engage with the GA community to explore a revised framework that preserves accessibility.
