Adobe’s Shantanu Narayen Announces Departure as CEO After 18-Year Tenure
Adobe Inc. announced on Thursday that CEO Shantanu Narayen will step down from his position once a successor has been appointed. This marks the end of an 18-year tenure that saw the creative software giant undergo significant transformation. The 62-year-old executive will continue to serve as the Chair of the Board following the transition.
The announcement coincided with Adobe’s first quarter fiscal 2026 earnings report. The report showed robust results, with subscription revenue growing 13 percent year-over-year. However, Adobe shares fell by 7% in extended trading as investors grappled with the leadership change and ongoing concerns about the company’s ability to compete in the AI era.
Under Narayen’s leadership, Adobe successfully transitioned from packaged software licenses to a subscription-based Creative Cloud model. The company has been striving to expand through generative artificial intelligence. Despite the company’s stock jumping more than sixfold during his tenure, it remains down 23% in 2026. This is part of a broader selloff in software stocks sparked by AI disruption concerns.
Frank Calderoni, Adobe’s lead independent director, will chair the special committee directing the CEO search process. The process will consider both internal and external candidates. Narayen, who joined Adobe in 1998 and became CEO in 2007, received $51 million in total compensation for the fiscal year 2025.
