Archer’s eVTOL Air Taxi Aims for First Commercial Launch in UAE by 2026
Archer Aviation has triumphantly concluded an extensive flight test campaign of its Midnight electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in the United Arab Emirates. This significant achievement could place Abu Dhabi at the forefront of launching the world’s first commercial air taxi operations by 2026.
The conducted tests in the UAE demonstrated Midnight’s full flight capabilities, including vertical takeoff, transition, and wingborne flight. These tests were carried out in the challenging desert environment of the UAE, characterized by extreme heat and sand conditions. The location for these rigorous tests was Al Ain Airport, and the tests were closely coordinated with the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), the Integrated Transport Centre, and operational partner Abu Dhabi Aviation.
“We designed Midnight to be able to handle challenging weather environments like the UAE with its sand and heat, and it delivered the results we expected it to across all phases of flight,” stated Adam Goldstein, Archer’s Founder and CEO. Following the successful tests, Archer has started receiving payments from Abu Dhabi Aviation under its definitive Launch Edition program agreement.
Abu Dhabi has revealed plans to establish an emirate-wide air taxi network with over 10 vertiport sites. The initial locations identified for this network are Zayed International Airport and Al Bateen Executive Airport. Archer is collaborating with Etihad Aviation Training to develop pilot training programs and is aiming to commence its first passenger-carrying flights in 2026. This could potentially make the UAE the first region globally to experience commercial eVTOL air taxi service.
