Historic Arrival of World’s First Aeromedical PC-12 PRO in Australia
Swiss aircraft manufacturer Pilatus has made history by delivering the world’s first PC-12 PRO, configured for aeromedical operations, to the iconic Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) in Australia. This landmark event in remote healthcare aviation took place on March 4, 2026.
The aircraft, bearing the serial number 3010, is the pioneer of five new PC-12 PRO turboprops that RFDS Central Operations ordered as part of a $42 million AUD ($60 million USD) fleet upgrade program. This delivery not only marks a significant upgrade but also continues the enduring partnership between Pilatus and RFDS, a partnership that has flourished for over three decades.
The new PC-12 PRO is equipped with state-of-the-art features. It boasts the latest Garmin 3000 avionics system, innovative safety features including the Safety Autoland System, and improved battery technology. Its spacious pressurized cabin, with over nine cubic meters of space, can comfortably accommodate patients, medical crew, and specialized equipment. A large cargo door and an integrated lift system ensure rapid patient loading.
“The PC-12 has an outstanding safety record and a proven history of reliability operating in the diverse and challenging environments where we deliver services, from southern Australia to the tropics in the Top End,” said Tony Vaughan ASM, RFDS SA/NT Chief Executive.
The aircraft is set to operate across South Australia and the Northern Territory, delivering emergency medical care to some of Australia’s most remote regions. The remaining four aircraft are expected to arrive throughout 2026.
