Greenland Opens New Ilulissat Airport, Unlocking Arctic Tourism
In a landmark moment for Arctic travel, Greenland’s new international airport in Ilulissat officially opened on October 29, 2026. The airport welcomed its inaugural direct flight from Copenhagen, completing the country’s ambitious three-airport expansion program.
Air Greenland’s wide-body Airbus A330-800neo Tuukkaq touched down at the newly built facility, launching the direct Copenhagen–Ilulissat route. The airport’s 2,200-metre jet-capable runway (IATA code: JAV) can accommodate modern aircraft, including the Boeing 737, Airbus A320neo, and A330neo—a first for the Disko Bay region.
Upcoming services include:
- Winter service: Jettime flights using Boeing 737-800 aircraft begin November 2, 2026, and are scheduled primarily on Wednesdays through March 2027.
- Summer service: Icelandair plans to launch seasonal flights from Reykjavík-Keflavík International Airport in summer 2027.
The opening completes a major infrastructure push by Greenland Airports, which also included the expanded Nuuk International Airport, launched in November 2024, and the new Qaqortoq Airport, opened in April 2026.
Officials say the Ilulissat gateway will significantly improve access to North Greenland and the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord. Airport operations are expected to reach full capacity by summer 2027.
For adventure travelers and Arctic explorers, the new airport is a game-changer—reducing transfer times and connecting one of Earth’s most spectacular destinations directly to Europe.
