AMD Secures AI Pioneer Dr. Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs for $8.2 Billion
AMD has recently made a significant move with an $8.2 billion all-stock acquisition of World Labs. This San Francisco-based AI research firm, founded by the esteemed Stanford University professor and AI pioneer, Dr. Fei-Fei Li, is now part of AMD’s portfolio. The deal, which was announced on September 28 and is currently making headlines as it nears completion, marks AMD’s second major acquisition in 2026 and stands as one of the largest in the company’s history.
World Labs is a specialist in the field of spatial intelligence AI. They are known for developing models that can generate, reconstruct, and simulate interactive 3D environments using text, image, and video inputs. The firm’s technology also facilitates robotic learning and simulation, making it a crucial player as the AI industry ventures into real-world applications such as autonomous vehicles and robotics.
Upon the deal’s closure, which is expected by the end of 2026 subject to regulatory approval, Dr. Li will assume the role of Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist at AMD. She will report directly to AMD’s CEO, Dr. Lisa Su. This acquisition forms a key part of AMD’s strategy to challenge Nvidia’s dominance in the AI sector by integrating hardware design with advanced model research. AMD’s CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, expressed that this merger will aid AMD in “developing the hardware, software, and systems that will power the next generation of AI.”
