Waymo Secures $5B Funding for Global Expansion of Autonomous Taxis

Alphabet’s autonomous vehicle unit, Waymo, has significantly increased its debut private debt offering to $5 billion, a substantial rise from the initial target of $3 billion. This move indicates immense investor confidence in the future of self-driving transportation. The announcement, made on October 6, 2026, represents the first instance of the robotaxi giant resorting to debt markets, after years of primarily depending on equity financing.

The loan was orchestrated by Goldman Sachs, with major private credit powerhouses such as Pacific Investment Management Co. (PIMCO), Blackstone Inc., and Sixth Street Partners participating as lenders. The financing is priced at 5.25 percentage points above the benchmark rate. The oversubscription, which escalated from $3 billion to $5 billion, demonstrates an extraordinary lender appetite for Waymo’s growth narrative.

The raised capital will be utilized to expand Waymo’s fleet and manage the escalating costs of AI and autonomous driving technology, as the company plans an aggressive global expansion. Currently, the company operates more than 500,000 paid rides per week across 14–15 U.S. cities and aims to reach 1 million weekly rides across 20 cities worldwide by the end of 2026. International launches in London, Tokyo, and Munich are in the pipeline, with additional markets in Japan and Singapore also planned. Earlier this year, Waymo raised $16 billion at a $126 billion valuation.
