Van’s Aircraft RV-12iS: The First MOSAIC Part 22 Certified Aircraft in Flight School
In a significant milestone for general aviation, Van’s Aircraft has unveiled the first-ever aircraft certified under the FAA’s innovative MOSAIC Part 22 framework. This pioneering aircraft has already been put into service at a flight school. The RV-12iS, adorned in classic Piper Cub yellow, was presented to EAA Lifetime Member Tom Snow at the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2026 on July 24. Both EAA Chairman Jack Pelton and Van’s founder Dick VanGrunsven graced the handover ceremony.
Subsequently, Snow leased the aircraft to Crystal Air Academy in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Here, it is currently aiding IFR flight training — a first for a factory-new aircraft at this price point. Unlike the previous Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) rules that limited aircraft weight to 1,320 lbs, the new Part 22 framework under MOSAIC lifts these stringent restrictions. This change allows for more flexible aircraft design and broadens pilot privileges.
The IFR-ready RV-12iS comes equipped with a heated AOA-capable pitot, an alternate static source, a redundant alternator, and an upgraded radiator and oil cooler. Priced from $246,200, the aircraft has already gained trust from over 40 flight schools across the nation, accumulating more than 100,000 training hours. Driven by the high demand from flight schools, Van’s is currently manufacturing approximately one RV-12iS every four days.
