New Public Backcountry Airstrip in the Works Near California’s Meadow View Peak
The Jim Richmond Backcountry Aviation Foundation (JRBAF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to expanding public access to backcountry flying, has announced the purchase of 136 acres near Meadow View Peak in California. The foundation plans to develop a brand-new public backcountry airstrip on this site.
Launching a $200,000 Phase 1 capital campaign, the foundation aims to fund initial site improvements, with a target opening date set for summer 2027. This acquisition aligns with JRBAF’s broader mission to acquire private land in remote areas, construct necessary aviation infrastructure, and then open these locations to all pilots free of charge.
The foundation, named in honor of CubCrafters founder Jim Richmond who passed away in November 2021, has previously developed and manages the historic 45 Ranch airstrip in southwestern Idaho. The new project in California represents a significant westward expansion of the foundation’s efforts. Their goal is to preserve and grow remote aviation access across the United States, ensuring that wild and scenic destinations remain accessible to pilots of all backgrounds for generations to come.
