World Tourism Day 2026: Embracing AI and Digital Technology in the Tourism Industry

Today, September 27, 2026, we join in the global celebration of World Tourism Day. This annual event, established by the UN Tourism organization in 1980, has a significant theme this year: “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism”. With El Salvador as the official host, the spotlight is on technology’s pivotal role in reshaping the travel industry.

The theme mirrors the ongoing digital revolution in the travel sector. Innovations like AI, machine learning, virtual reality, and smart travel platforms are redefining how we plan, book, and enjoy our travels. At the heart of the discussions are the vast opportunities and responsibilities that come with this digital shift. Industry leaders emphasize the need for solid governance structures, stringent data protection measures, and inclusive access to ensure benefits for all destinations.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the importance of equitable innovation, stating that “progress should not create new inequalities between destinations.” With tourism contributing nearly $10.9 trillion to the global economy in 2024 and supporting 357 million jobs, the call for a smarter, more sustainable industry is more crucial than ever.
