Viking’s Groundbreaking Zero-Emission Cruise Ship Set to Launch in November 2026
The cruise industry stands on the brink of a transformative milestone as Viking (NYSE: VIK) gears up to introduce the Viking Libra — the world’s pioneering hydrogen-powered cruise ship with zero emissions. Slated for launch in November 2026, this ship, which was floated out at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard in Italy earlier this year, is currently in its final construction phase. This represents a landmark moment for eco-friendly maritime travel.
The Viking Libra, a 998-guest vessel, spans approximately 784 feet (239 meters) in length, with a gross tonnage of 54,300 tons and 499 staterooms. Its state-of-the-art propulsion system, developed in collaboration with Fincantieri subsidiary Isotta Fraschini Motori, utilizes liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells capable of generating up to 6 megawatts of power. This innovative zero-emission system enables the ship to reach environmentally sensitive destinations that are inaccessible to conventional cruise ships.

The Viking Libra is set to spend her inaugural season sailing itineraries across the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. A sister ship, the Viking Astrea, also recently launched at Ancona, is scheduled for delivery in May 2027 and will likewise be hydrogen-powered.
