Microsoft Commits Over $10 Billion for AI and Cloud Infrastructure in the Middle East
Microsoft has pledged a massive investment of over $10 billion towards the development of cloud and AI infrastructure in the Middle East by 2030. This ambitious plan targets key regions including Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, marking one of the tech giant’s most significant regional commitments to date.
The investment, announced on September 23, 2026, encompasses both capital and operating expenses. It forms part of a larger strategic framework that Microsoft has dubbed a blueprint for the region’s digital future. The comprehensive plan includes the expansion of Azure cloud capacity, the introduction of new AI capabilities, and the development of sovereign-ready cloud services. Additionally, it features Arabic and multilingual AI tools, specifically designed to cater to local governments and businesses.
Brad Smith, Microsoft’s Vice Chair and President, highlighted the company’s intention to deepen its partnerships with prominent national AI organizations. These include HUMAIN in Saudi Arabia, G42 in the UAE, and QAI in Qatar. In addition to this, Microsoft plans to invest over $400 million in subsea and terrestrial connectivity throughout the region. This builds upon its existing involvement in the SeaMeWe-6 subsea cable system.
The announcement solidifies Microsoft’s position as a key player in the Gulf states’ race to become global AI hubs. This race is driven by state-backed investment and energy resources. Analysts have noted that this investment also strengthens Microsoft’s Azure ecosystem in one of the world’s most rapidly digitizing regions.
