Over 1,200 Engine Models Approved for Swift Fuels 100R Unleaded Avgas
In a significant move towards eradicating leaded fuel from general aviation, Swift Fuels has announced a substantial expansion of its Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for 100R unleaded aviation gasoline. The FAA has added more than 1,200 piston engine models and 1,600 airframe models to the Approved Model List (AML). This extended approval, effective from July 14, 2026, signifies that 100R is now certified for aircraft that collectively consume an estimated 56% of all 100LL avgas used across the United States.
The STC expansion encompasses engines from over 80 manufacturers, including Lycoming (395 models) and Continental (195 models). This marks the first phase of Swift Fuels’ multi-phase transition plan. The company highlighted that 100R is currently the only commercially available 100-octane unleaded avgas that operates under FAA-approved STCs and adheres to the ASTM International D8603 production specification. Pilots who already have Swift UL94 STCs will automatically receive a 100R STC through Swift’s “Forever Avgas STC” program at no extra cost.
The distribution of 100R is actively expanding across the U.S. to locations in 29 states, including California, Colorado, Arizona, Florida, and Wisconsin. It is also reaching international airports in Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Austria, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. Phase II and III approvals, targeting higher-performance engines such as turbocharged Lycoming 540 and Continental 550 series models, are anticipated through 2027 and into early 2028. This is part of the industry’s plan to transition to a fully unleaded general aviation fleet by 2030.
