Can Dark Chocolate’s Aroma Enhance Your Workout? A Study Investigates
A surprising new study published in the peer-reviewed journal Frontiers in Physiology has discovered that the simple act of smelling dark chocolate before and during a resistance workout can significantly enhance physical performance, without making the exercise feel any harder.
The research was conducted by the team at the University of Malaya in Malaysia. The exploratory study involved 23 moderately trained young men, who fasted for at least 10 hours before performing leg extension exercises at 80% of their maximum weight.
The participants were divided into three groups. Each group was exposed to either 90% cocoa dark chocolate, 60% cocoa milk chocolate, or plain water as a control. They were instructed to inhale the scent for 30 seconds between each set.
The results were intriguing. The dark chocolate group completed approximately 18 more repetitions than the control group, with no increase in perceived exertion. The researchers hypothesize that the familiar scent tricks the brain into an anticipatory state of fullness, suppressing hunger and boosting motivation. “The dark chocolate scent serves as a learned cue for a rich, bitter, and highly satiating food,” explained the study’s senior author, Mohamed Nashrudin bin Naharudin.
The findings suggest that olfactory priming with food aromas could become a simple, non-invasive tool for enhancing athletic training — no supplements required.
