Nashville Airport Embarks on Historic Renaming to Honor Late Country Legend, Dolly Parton
In a unanimous 6-0 vote on Friday, September 11, 2026, the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA) board officially initiated the process of renaming Nashville International Airport (BNA) to honor the late country music icon, Dolly Parton. Parton, beloved by many, passed away on August 25 at the age of 80 after a brief battle with cancer.
The vote signifies the first formal step in what officials describe as a “multifaceted process.” While a final name is yet to be decided, the authority has stated it is “working closely with the appropriate parties to thoughtfully determine how Dolly Parton’s name and legacy will be incorporated.” Tennessee Governor Bill Lee was among the first to publicly endorse the renaming, stating that it is fitting for Tennessee’s gateway to the world to bear the name of “our state’s favorite daughter.”
Once finalized, Dolly Parton would become the first woman to have her name on one of the 50 busiest airports in the United States — a milestone celebrated by fans worldwide. The renaming process is expected to cost between $8 million and $10 million and could take up to a year to complete, including changing all signage and completing administrative paperwork. A public petition supporting the change amassed more than 175,000 signatures following the star’s death.
