Hawaii Encourages Tourists to Postpone Kauai Visits Amid Hurricane Lowell Recovery
In the wake of Hurricane Lowell, the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority (HTA) is advising travelers with imminent plans to visit Kauaʻi to either reschedule or reroute their trips to other Hawaiian islands. This is due to ongoing recovery efforts on the island.
As of September 10, 2026, Kauaʻi County and state agencies are still engaged in road clearance and power restoration in local communities. Essential travel restrictions on roads, park closures, and limited beach access are still in effect. This includes Hanamāʻulu Beach Park, which is set to remain closed through September 30 for repair works. The Kaumūmene Trail, the only public land access to Hideaways Beach, has also extended its closure through September 18.
Several major airlines have issued travel waivers for passengers affected by the situation. These include:
- American Airlines
- Alaska Airlines (also allowing eligible passengers to change their destination from Kauaʻi to Honolulu, Hilo, Kona, or Kahului at no extra cost through September 23)
- Hawaiian Airlines
- Delta Air Lines
- Southwest Airlines
In addition, Global Affairs Canada has issued an uncommon regional advisory, urging Canadians to avoid non-essential travel to Kauaʻi County.
The HTA stresses that this guidance is about postponement, not permanent cancellation. They assure that Maui, Oahu, and the Big Island are fully operational and ready to welcome visitors. Travelers are urged to keep an eye on official channels for updates on Kauaʻi’s recovery timeline.
