Blueberry-Derived Compound Pterostilbene: A Potential Aid in Muscle Fat Burning

A recent study, published in the esteemed journal Food Bioscience on September 5, 2026, brings forth encouraging findings for health and wellness enthusiasts. Researchers from the prestigious Shinshu University in Japan have discovered a natural compound present in blueberries, grapes, and other berries that might aid muscle cells in burning excess fat rather than storing it.

The compound in question, pterostilbene, is a naturally occurring polyphenol. It has been found to stabilize a crucial protein known as PPARδ (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor delta) within skeletal muscle cells. By preserving this protein from degradation, pterostilbene enhances fat burning and assists muscle cells in processing fatty acids for energy, instead of allowing them to accumulate as detrimental lipid droplets, a condition referred to as myosteatosis.

Lead investigator Associate Professor Takakazu Mitani highlighted that surplus fat in skeletal muscle, often instigated by high-fat diets, physical inactivity, and aging, can hinder glucose metabolism and overall muscle functionality. These findings pave the way for a promising new direction in functional food and nutritional supplement development aimed at metabolic health. However, researchers advise that in vivo safety and efficacy studies are still required before this discovery can be converted into practical treatments or supplements.
