SK Gas Shatters Record with $5.3M Panama Canal Transit Fee Amid Global Trade Turmoil
South Korea’s energy titan, SK Gas Ltd., has shattered records by paying an unprecedented $5.3 million in a Panama Canal Authority auction. This fee secures a transit slot on September 1, 2026, marking the highest amount ever paid to traverse the iconic waterway.
This staggering sum eclipses the previous record of $4.6 million, set earlier the same month by another South Korean shipper. The spike in fees is a direct result of two major global crises converging: the Iran war and an escalating El Niño weather pattern.
The Iran war has effectively shut down the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting global trade routes and forcing ships to reroute through Panama. Meanwhile, the intensifying El Niño threatens severe drought conditions that could deplete freshwater levels in the canal, thereby limiting shipping capacity.
According to Argus Media, wait times at the canal for vessels without reservations have surged to an unprecedented 11 days. The Panama Canal Authority has responded by announcing stricter restrictions on the number of slots and cargo limits starting in September. Major shipping lines, including MSC, Hapag-Lloyd, and CMA CGM, have started implementing new surcharges. Analysts warn these costs will soon be passed on to consumers through higher prices on imported goods.
