GLP-1 Medications and Their Potential Role in Slowing Aging: A New Trial Seeks Evidence

The weight-loss drug revolution is venturing into exciting new territory. Researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston have initiated one of the first clinical trials specifically designed to investigate whether tirzepatide — the active ingredient in Zepbound — can significantly slow down the biological aging process in humans.

The UTMB trial will monitor adults aged 55 to 70 who are eligible for weight-loss treatment. The focus will not be solely on the number on the scale, but also on a wide range of biological aging markers. These include inflammation levels, cognitive function, muscle strength, and mobility. The researchers hope that the study will show a 10–15% slowdown in biological aging, according to Dr. Thomas Blackwell, a professor of medicine at UTMB.

This new trial is built upon earlier findings from UC San Diego. There, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study discovered that semaglutide — marketed as Ozempic and Wegovy — slowed biological aging across multiple epigenetic clocks. The most significant effects were linked to inflammation, heart, brain, liver, and metabolic health. These results were published in Nature Communications.

“Wait till we prove that it also slows your aging process — everybody’s going to want to take a GLP-1,” Dr. Blackwell told ABC News. However, experts warn that GLP-1 drugs are not yet recognized as longevity medications. Healthy individuals currently have no scientific basis to use them for anti-aging purposes. Despite this, the momentum in research is undeniably growing.
