OpenAI Introduces ChatGPT for Teens, Enhanced with Safety Measures
OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT for Teens on August 18, 2026. This version of the renowned AI chatbot is specifically designed for users aged 13 to 17. The updated experience includes robust, age-appropriate safety protections that are activated by default, addressing longstanding concerns about the absence of safeguards for younger users on the platform.
These key safety measures encompass content restrictions on topics such as suicide, self-harm, eating disorders, violence, romantic language, and sexually explicit material. The chatbot is also programmed to avoid promoting emotional dependence or suggesting it possesses human emotions. To seamlessly integrate minors into the experience, OpenAI employs an AI-powered age-prediction system, eliminating the need for teens to create a new account or manually adjust settings.
On the academic side, the innovative Study Mode feature assists students with problem-solving by providing guiding questions and step-by-step support, instead of merely supplying direct answers. This is a direct countermeasure to concerns about AI-facilitated academic dishonesty. Parents are offered increased control through family tools, which include safety notifications and the option to establish Quiet Hours. The worldwide rollout commenced on August 18 and is projected to conclude within two weeks. This launch comes in the wake of several lawsuits against AI companies for harm inflicted on minors and as ChatGPT’s user base has expanded to over 900 million weekly users.
