India and U.S. Finalize Initial Phase of Trade Agreement, Awaiting Signature

In a significant advancement for international trade, India has declared the completion of the initial phase of its Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) with the United States. The agreement is currently in the process of legal drafting and final review. Piyush Goyal, the Commerce and Industry Minister, confirmed this progress at the SRCC Centenary Conclave in New Delhi. He expressed hope for the deal’s swift implementation.

Rajesh Agrawal, Trade Secretary, also expressed confidence in the ongoing negotiations with Washington. India’s goal is to secure preferential market access and enhanced tariff stability under the proposed agreement. This agreement aims to more than double the bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030, a significant increase from the current $191 billion.

The blueprint for a temporary trade agreement was unveiled in February. However, fluctuating U.S. tariff policies have led to repeated delays. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to visit India from October 17–22, 2026. The visit, which will focus on energy cooperation, commercial investment, and broader economic ties, could potentially expedite the formal signing of the deal.
