Gen Alpha Males: The New Power Players in the Beauty Industry

The beauty industry is witnessing a surprising shift in power dynamics. The new influential consumers are none other than Gen Alpha males. The narrative around tween beauty has predominantly revolved around girls, with their penchant for gourmand body sprays and adult-grade skincare. However, a bold new trend is on the rise. Young boys are now purchasing luxury fragrances and TikTok-famous hair products at an unprecedented rate, as revealed in a recent report by Business of Fashion.

Supporting this trend, data from fragrance industry analysts indicates that teen boys outpace all other demographic groups in fragrance spending. They’ve recorded a significant 26% increase in purchases, with many graduating from body sprays to high-end prestige fragrances starting at $150. Ian Ginsberg, President of C.O. Bigelow Chemists, confirms this observation. He notes that store staff have seen young boys, sometimes armed with their parents’ credit cards, buying top-shelf scents.

Social media, particularly TikTok, is a major catalyst for this shift. Hashtags such as #PerfumeTok and #FragranceTok, which collectively boast over 1.5 million posts, have introduced a new generation to the allure of prestige fragrances. Viral reviews can send products into immediate backorder. Gen Alpha males are also snapping up TikTok-trending hair styling products, indicating a significant shift in the beauty industry’s target audience.

Brands and retailers are swiftly adapting their strategies to tap into this lucrative and rapidly growing demographic, aiming to outpace their competitors.
