Climbing Six Flights of Stairs Daily Can Reduce Heart Disease Mortality by 39%

A groundbreaking study, unveiled on August 13, 2026, at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress, discloses that a simple act of climbing a staircase can be one of the most potent health habits. The research was conducted by the University of East Anglia and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH), involving a comprehensive meta-analysis of nine studies with over 480,000 participants aged between 35 and 84, monitored over a median period of 14 years.

The findings, concurrently published in the American Journal of Cardiovascular Drugs on August 12, 2026, are noteworthy: individuals who regularly climbed stairs were 39% less likely to die from cardiovascular disease and 24% less likely to die from any cause compared to those who seldom took the stairs. The data also indicated a significantly reduced risk of heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure.

The researchers highlight that stair climbing requires no equipment, no gym membership, and no special preparation — just a set of stairs typically found in any home or office building. With over a quarter of adults worldwide not meeting the recommended physical activity levels, this study offers a compelling, accessible solution for enhancing public health. As per the scientists, climbing as few as six flights of stairs daily could make a significant difference.

“Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide,” said Professor Vassilios Vassiliou of UEA’s Norwich Medical School, underscoring the public health significance of these findings.
