The Resurgence of the 1935 Montana Bluebird: A Rare Aviation Marvel
Aviation history was beautifully resurrected at the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2026. Montana restorer, Tim Talen, unveiled the reborn 1935 National Airplane and Motor Co. Bluebird LP-4 — believed to be the only surviving model of its kind in the world.
The compact two-seater aircraft, originally built in Billings, Montana during the mid-1930s, was showcased as part of AirVenture’s celebrated “Vintage in Review” program on Wednesday, July 22. The Bluebird LP-4, designed to accommodate two passengers and powered by a single reciprocating engine, was brought back to life by Talen. An award-winning restorer and inductee of the Vintage Aircraft Association’s Hall of Fame, Talen dedicated years to reviving this nearly forgotten design, which never saw widespread commercial success due to the economic hardships of the Great Depression era.
General Aviation News reported the debut on August 6, 2026, highlighting that Talen’s meticulous restoration revived an airplane that had virtually disappeared from the aviation scene. The Bluebird LP-4’s appearance at “The World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration” attracted admiration from vintage aircraft historians and general aviation enthusiasts alike, emphasizing the enduring spirit of American grassroots aviation innovation.
