FAA Approves Swift 100R Unleaded Avgas for Over 1,600 Aircraft Models
In a significant move towards eradicating leaded fuel from general aviation, the FAA has significantly broadened the Approved Model List (AML) for Swift Fuels’ 100R unleaded aviation gasoline. The expanded list now includes more than 1,200 piston engine models and over 1,600 airframe models, all approved via Supplemental Type Certificate (STC).
This announcement comes from Swift Fuels, based in West Lafayette, Indiana. The Phase I expansion encompasses engines and airframes that collectively account for approximately 56% of the current U.S. 100LL avgas consumption.
- The approved engine list includes models from Lycoming (approximately 395 models), Continental (around 195 models), Curtiss Wright, and Pratt & Whitney, among over 80 manufacturers.
- On the airframe side, approvals include 118 Cessna models and 101 Beechcraft models from Textron Aviation, along with 98 Piper models, Mooney, Grumman, WACO, and many more.
Swift’s 100R is currently the only commercially available 100-octane unleaded avgas operating under FAA-approved STCs and complying with ASTM International’s D8603 production specification. This milestone is part of the U.S. government’s initiative to fully transition general aviation away from leaded avgas by the end of 2030.
Phase II and Phase III approvals, which target higher-performance and large-bore engines, are expected to come through by 2028. It is important to note that pilots must obtain a Swift Fuels STC before using 100R in eligible aircraft.
