Over 1,600 Aircraft Models Approved for Swift Fuels 100R Unleaded Avgas
In a significant advancement for the general aviation community’s shift from leaded fuel, Swift Fuels announced on July 14–15, 2026, a major expansion of the Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for its 100R unleaded avgas. The FAA has added over 1,200 piston engine models and 1,600 airframe models to the Approved Model List (AML).
The newly certified aircraft include approximately 118 Cessna models, 101 Beechcraft aircraft, 98 Piper planes, and others such as Mooney, Grumman, Stinson, WACO, and Fairchild models. These aircraft collectively consume up to 56% of all 100LL avgas sold in the United States. Engine approvals span more than 80 piston engine OEMs, including but not limited to:
- Lycoming (~395 models)
- Continental (~195 models)
- Curtis Wright
- Pratt & Whitney
This announcement by Swift Fuels is described as Phase 1 of its comprehensive unleaded transition plan. Phase 2 and Phase 3 approvals are set to target higher-performance engines through early 2028. The fuel, which complies with ASTM International specification D8603, is currently the only commercially available 100-octane unleaded avgas operating under FAA-approved STCs. Swift anticipates over 100 U.S. airfields, along with locations in the EU, UK, Canada, and Australia, to begin adopting 100R in the near future. The FAA’s overarching goal is to phase out the use of 100LL leaded avgas by the end of 2030.
